James has been recognized for his research abilities with the following awards: National Resort & Commercial Recreation Association Professor of the Year (2006); Most Outstanding Conference Paper (TTRA National Conference, 2001), Holland America Line Westours Research Award (2004 & 2000), American Society of Travel Agents Future Tourism Leader Award (1999), and the Excellence in Research Award from the National Resort and Commercial Recreation Association (1998).
James serves on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Travel Research, the Journal of Park and Recreation Administration, Journal of Leisure Research, and Event Management, and is on the Advisory Board for the Journal of Sport Tourism.
Prior to his work at Texas A&M, he spent six years working for both Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Viking Line. He was originally hired as a Youth Coordinator and earned promotions to Golf Pro, Host, Senior Host, Assistant Cruise Director and Cruise Director. As a Cruise Director, he was responsible for directing and scheduling a staff of 45 for weekly activities and entertainment for 1,800 passengers. He also acted as a master of ceremonies for many top name performers; hosted a daily morning television show; and lectured on ports of call, shipboard activities and procedures.
